What the %$#@ does it mean?

I said , " This patient needs admission with severe CAL in MAU first , his ABG is not good, he needs CPAP before he goes for CTPA to exclude PE."
If ordinary people without medical knowledge background hear such words, they might wonder what we are talking about.There are a lot of medical jargon we use in daily life both in conversations and notes.
However, excessive usage of abbreviations can cause confusions and misunderstanding.
Here are some abbreviations ,commonly used in hospitals.

BIBA = Brought In By Ambulance
FLK = Frightening Looking Kid
LOL = Little Old Lady ( NOT Laugh Out Loud )
PAFO= Passed Out and Fell Over
PEARL= Pupils Equal And Reactive to Light
LOLINAD= Little Old Lady in Not Apparently Distressed
NGT = Naso Gastric Tube
SOB = Shortness of Breath

There was a joke that one patient was angry when he saw SOB in his medical records , because he thought that meant "Son of the Bitch " .
We should try not to use too many short forms so that we can make better communication.
LOL :)

Arterial Cannulation

Arterial Line insertion : seems easy and same as venous cannulation but in fact , a lot more difficult . The invisible radial artery , only you can feel but can't see , is the main trouble. But people prefer this ,especially in ICU , in order not to do repeated arterial punctures.

TOYS R DANGEROUS

I came across some hospital news about toys causing children troubles.Recently few children in Australia and New Zeland swallowed coloured beads and developed neurological symptoms.

People concerned about possible GHB contents in these toys.

So what is GHB ? GHB is a short form for Gamma Hydroxy Butyrate and can cause ecstasy like feelings in children.

There are a lot of condemnation about Chinese toys recently and also in this time these toys also being manufactured in China.

In 2007, Bindeez was named Australia's Toy of the Year.

Now government officers are considering for recall of these toys.

Health Videos

HealthiNation : which is a very good educational video site for ordinary people.Videos are classified into various categories .Images are clear and also download able if you have video download software already installed into your computer.
Sometimes,it is difficult to find correct words to explain to patients.If we look at such videos before we encounter difficult consultation , a lot of hassles can be prevented.
Talking to patients is , indeed,an art and it has a major role to pass clinical exams.

Here is an example about discussions for Hypertension.
